2 sisters - 2 portraits - 2 visions

Two students (Sisters) of my Sunday class wanted to paint a portrait. "Interesting," I thought. They must have had a talk with their parents and decided that it was time for a more realistic approach to painting. We discussed options and looked at some figure drawing books to learn the proportions of a human face. I let the two girls have free range on how they wanted to start. It turned out that the older girl (13 years old) had a fixed idea of what the portrait should look like, while here younger sister (9 years old) did not know what to do, what colors or brush to use. To make a long story short - the outcome could not have been more different and opposite in both the painting style and color palette.

Older Sister          VS         Younger Sister

graphic style                          painterly style
flat brush                              round brush
used hand made stencils              free hand brush strokes
black and white                        multi color use
large face, beyond the canvas       small face, center of the canvas
no background -white paint            horizontal lines as background
not a self portrait                              a self portrait
square canvas                          rectangular canvas
signature on the frame (side)         signature on the front on canvas

The only thing they had in common was that they were sisters, painted a face and loved the result.
